UFC 230: Cormier submits Lewis to defend heavyweight title

Daniel Cormier The Champion

Daniel Cormier The Champion

Cormier remains undefeated at heavyweight as he defended his title and status as the baddest man on the planet with a flawless performance against the always risky Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230 on Saturday night. He also said the only fight he would be open to at 205 pounds would be a rematch with Jon Jones, the only man to ever defeat him, provided Jones defeats Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 on December 29.

There is one more to go for Daniel Cormier before the two-division champion hangs up the gloves and walks away from the sport that made him rich and famous.

In fact, Cormier is now the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously and then defend one of them inside the Octagon. "You're talking about an opportunity to go out on an all-time high, headlining Las Vegas against Brock Lesnar, before I turn 40".

But for Daniel Cormier and challenger Derrick Lewis, their biggest beef is over chicken.

The tap came at 2:14 into the second round as Cormier jumped up to celebrate the first defense of his heavyweight title.

Cormier, who upset Stipe Miocic in July to win the heavyweight title, will get one more chance to show what he can do before he winds up a legendary career. Lewis mimicked Cormier's moves from the video at the news conference and both fighters erupted into laughter. Some fans in the crowd booed Cormier for dominating Lewis with his ground game - perhaps hoping to see Lewis land another stunning knockout blow - but the Black Beast never managed to land any power punches.

"It's insane that people say me and Lesnar would be a mega fight when the reality is the mega fight is Jones and I", Cormier told FloCombat. I come in here and try to do my thing.

He submitted his man early in the second round via rear-naked choke. He had won nine of his last 10 fights and his self-deprecating humour - including a randy answer as to why he stripped off his shorts inside the cage after his last win - earned him a sponsorship deal with Popeyes Chicken. Three years I've been the light-heavyweight champion because this dude can't stay out of trouble.

In other middleweight action, rising star Israel Adesanya remained unbeaten by knocking out Derek Brunson in the first round.
