Manchester United Legend Wayne Rooney Set For Shock England Recall v USA

The 33-year-old announced his international retirement over a year ago

Wayne Rooney is set to come out of worldwide retirement for England's friendly against the United States later this month to mark his contribution to the national team.

The 33-year-old forward has not played for his country since November 2016, having announced his global retirement the following August with immediate effect.

There is a strong charity element to Rooney's inclusion as it is hoped it will help raise around £500,000 for the Wayne Rooney Foundation, which helps various charities including the NSPCC.

Those talks have gone well and Rooney is set to be given his chance to say goodbye in the friendly against the US at Wembley on November 15. "It's fitting the match will be against the United States of America".

Rooney retired from global duty in August 2017 as England's record goalscorer, while he has won more caps than any other outfield player.

"I have been hugely impressed with the progress of this young England team".

England face a crucial UEFA Nations League match against Croatia a few days after the friendly against the United States, though Rooney is not expected to play any part in that game. I hope that whilst I am with the squad I can pass on some of my experience.

"I was lucky to enjoy a long and successful career with a great many people helping me to achieve my dreams".

The team went out on penalties to Columbus Crew.

It's said the 33-year old is not only to be included in Gareth Southgate's squad, he is also set to pull on the captain's armband again for what would be his 120th cap.

The Sun On Sunday exclusively revealed that Gareth Southgate and the FA have been planning how to pay tribute to the country's all-time leading goalscorer since he announced his retirement more than 14 months ago.

"We all look forward to the occasion and lending support to a number of good causes through the Wayne Rooney Foundation".
