NASA's Parker Solar Probe, mankind's first mission to "touch" the Sun, has set a new record for closest approach to the Sun by a human-made object, the United States space agency announced. At 1:04 pm ET on October 29, the spacecraft got closer than 42.7 million kilometers (26.55 million miles) from the Sun's surface-a new record for a human-built object. Parker has developed a Solar Probe and record the heliocentric velocity (relative to the Sun), also surpassing the record of Helios 2, which 246 960 km/h. As the Parker Solar Probe mission progresses, the spacecraft will repeatedly break its own records, with a final close approach of 3.83 million miles from the Sun's surface expected in 2024.

"It's only been 78 days since the launch of Parker, but we're getting our star closer than any other spacecraft in history, said project Manager Andy Driesman of the applied physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University". Parker Solar Probe's speed and position were calculated using DSN measurements made on October 24, and the team used that information along with known orbital forces to calculate the spacecraft's speed and position from that point on.At its current distance to the Sun, the probe requires 150 days to make a complete orbit. By April of that year, the spacecraft had set new records for closest distance to the Sun, and speed travelling around the Sun. Parker was one of the first in the world of specialists involved in studies of the solar wind. It was released so that it can be found to find out what things affect the earth in the solar system.

The current distance of the spacecraft from the Sun is still quite large, but it might change because the probe is moving closer towards the Sun. Perihelion is expected at about 10:28 p.m. EST on November 5.

The team periodically measures the spacecraft's precise speed and position using NASA's Deep Space Network, or DSN. According to NASA, the plucky Parker Solar (spacecraft) is closer to the Sun than any other spacecraft has done before. This means that it will be within the crown of the Sun, that is the outer layers of its atmosphere where temperatures can reach 500 thousand Kelvin (about 500 thousand degrees Celsius) and even several millions of Kelvins. The data will help the scientist to understand the sun.
