Police said they're investigating the deaths and that the city medical examiner's office will determine the causes.

Police at the scene, October 24, 2018, near the Hudson River in New York City where the bodies of two dead females, bound in duct tape, were found.

The same relatives reportedly rejected the idea that the sisters shared a weird suicide pact, though that remains cops' working theory, police sources said.

NY police say the bodies of 16-year-old Tala Farea and 22-year-old Rotana Farea were found last Wednesday.

The mom of Rotana and Tala Farea told detectives that on October 23 she received a phone call from the Saudi Arabian Embassy informing her that her family's residency in the US was in jeopardy because the sisters had applied for immigration asylum, sources said.

Their mother reported the younger sister missing two months ago, but the search was called off when Tala was discovered visiting her older sister.

"There, below a small pier that juts out from the park at 68th Street, lay the bodies of two young women, bound together by duct tape at their waists and ankles". But the missing child report was withdrawn after it was claimed she was living with her elder sister in New York City.

Anyone with information about the Farea sisters is urged to call the New York City Police Department's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

They were found with "no obvious signs of trauma", and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to New York City Police.

The Saudi consulate-general in NY said it was "conducting a continuous follow-up to find out the facts" regarding the incident, according to a statement shared by Al Arabiya on Tuesday. Both were clothed and had black jackets with fur trim, police said.

Police are considering whether the sisters died as part of a suicide pact, possibly jumping from the George Washington bridge some six miles (10 kilometers) north of where their bodies were found.

The Hudson River separates NY from New Jersey, and police were scouring the river banks to see if they can establish where the sisters entered the water.

The bodies are believed to have washed ashore with the tide and stayed when the tide went out, police said.
