In contrast to most school shootings that have occurred in the United States, classes were allowed to continue at Butler High after McKeithen was shot dead.

Students and staff at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina faced gut-wrenching tragedy Monday morning when a student shot and killed a classmate during a fight in a crowded hallway as students were entering the school for the day.

High school student Jorge Sanchez told WSOC-TV in Charlotte that the shooting happened as the result of an argument that escalated.

Tyrrell said a school resource officer who was in the building heard a commotion in a hallway adjacent to the cafeteria at 7:14 a.m. and saw students running away. Investigators have the weapon used. Cuffie, 16, was named as the suspect in a press conference with officials a few hours after the shooting.

Officials say they believe the shooting 'to be an isolated incident, ' and that the secene was secured by police.

Hundreds of people gathered by the Butler High School flagpole Monday evening for a vigil in memory of sophomore Bobby McKeithen, who was shot inside the school Monday morning.

By 9:30 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced that the lockdown had been lifted. "But we are going to look into all those things, and we will do our best to make sure that this never happens again".

Wilcox said "dozens if not hundreds" of students witnessed the shooting before fleeing in panic. He said the disagreement occurred in a hallway and that there were "kids in the hallways when it took place". "As fear took over, the young person brought a gun to solve the problems".

Yvonne Gloston, a parent of a CMS high schooler, said her child does not go to Butler, but that she had friends and family with children at the high school and traveled to the school site after the shooting.

Parents were alerted to the incident via a robo call issued by CMS.

Classes were proceeding for students who remained on campus.
