Rome escalator collapse Dozens of Russian CSKA Moscow fans injured one 'loses leg'

Twenty people, a lot of them fans of the CSKA Moscow football team, have been hurt after a crowded escalator at a Rome metro station suddenly sped up, hurling people down the staircase.

Dramatic Twitter footage posted by a Russian fan shows the escalator running at incredible speed, causing people to pile up and crash into each other at the bottom.

People on the parallel escalator were seen trying to help others clamber across the divide to safety.

One person was seriously hurt in the accident at the city-centre Repubblica station, they said.

Emergency services described the escalator's steps as "split and crumpled" and surrounded by broken glass and beer bottles, reports Sky Italia.

More than 20 people were taken to hospital and one has reportedly had a foot amputated.

Fans were headed toward Rome's Olympic Stadium, where CSKA Moscow was scheduled to play AS Roma on Tuesday.

About 1500 CSKA fans were attending the match.

She said that it appeared that "some Russian supporters were dancing and jumping on the escalator".
