An underground tunnel designed for speeding passengers through Los Angeles will open in December, entrepreneur Elon Musk says.

In another tweeted response, Musk said the test tunnel has a top speed of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers).

Elon Musk says his first Boring Company tunnel is nearly done, and it'll open to the public on December 10.

Musk's venture, "The Boring Company", has been pushing the underground system as a futuristic concept that could radically speed transport within and between cities.

Elon Musk has come a step closer to creating a "loop" transit system beneath Los Angeles to bring an end to "soul-destroying traffic" in the city.

Responding to comments on Twitter, Musk said there would be an opening event that night and "free rides for the public next day".

According to The Boring Company website, the Hawthorne tunnel "leaves SpaceX property (parking lot east of Crenshaw Boulevard and south of 120th Street), turns west under 120th Street, and remains under 120th Street for up to 2-miles".

One of the proposed routes would take passengers from the United States capital - the District of Columbia, to NY in under 30 minutes.

The trial tunnel will have a top speed of 155 miles per hour, according to the billionaire-entrepreneur, surpassing the 125 mph traveled by an electric sled in a video of a test run posted in May a year ago.

In addition to this tunnel, the Boring Company is also working an a tunnel between Washington DC and NY.
