In a "typical Thai procedure", Lefevre added that police took the pair back to the previously defaced wall after they had admitted their actions to police.

Mr Furlong reportedly told police that the word "Scouser" referred to his home town of Liverpool and Ms Schneider was said to have told officers that she spray-painted the letter "B" as a reference to her first initial.

Lee Furlong, 23, was caught on CCTV using a can of black spray paint to tag the historic Tha Phae gate in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on October 18 at 4am.

Colonel Teerasak Sriprasert, the province's police chief, said the 23-year-olds were drunk and are now in police custody.

But once she found out what had happened, she said it felt like "bricks of cement dropped on my shoulders". After that, her daughter will have to remain in Thailand until her trial, which could be in two months, she said. "I'm sorry to say it, but not my daughter, not my Britteny".

An official with Global Affairs Canada said they are aware of the charges against Schneider.

Schneider and Lee are being detained in the city's provincial court and could remain there for up to 24 hours at which point they'd be allowed to ask for bail.

"She never did a bad thing in her life".

"Consular services are being provided to a Canadian citizen who has been arrested in Thailand", said a statement from spokesman Philip Hannan.

Schneider's mom said they have been working with the consulate. "That's been shipped off in the process and she will be released Monday".
