Ex-Trump Campaign Chief Manafort to Be Sentenced in February

Mueller said he’s ready to deliver key findings in his Trump probe

Defense attorney Kevin Downing said in court that there are "significant issues with Mr. Manafort's health right now that have to do with his confinement".

In court Friday a judge set a sentencing date of February 8.

The court plans to reach a verdict on Manafort in the first trial where he is accused of Bank fraud and tax evasion.

Several sentencing experts predicted Manafort, a 69-year-old former political consultant, would receive a prison term of about 10 years.

Manafort also pleaded guilty to related federal charges in Washington, D.C., in a plea agreement to avoid a trial there and in exchange for cooperating with prosecutors.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has been pressuring the special counsel to wrap up the investigation that has gone on for more than a year, the sources said.

Manafort's wife was not seen in the courtroom on Friday. He also faces sentencing in a related case in the District of Columbia, also brought by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. Republicans say the Federal Bureau of Investigation made missteps when it applied to a special court for a warrant to conduct surveillance on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page and questioned the FBI's use of a confidential informant who reached out to several Trump campaign officials.

The charges largely predated Manafort's tenure on Trump's successful presidential campaign in 2016.

It was reported by Bloomberg earlier Wednesday that Mueller's office is preparing to deliver core findings of its investigation shortly after next month's midterm elections. He was an attendee of the Trump Tower meeting where Russians purportedly offered information to the campaign that could hurt Hillary Clinton; he offered private briefings on the campaign to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska; and he was instrumental at the Republican National Convention when the party softened its stance on Ukraine.

Under the deal, the special counsel did not have to decide whether to prosecute Manafort on the remaining 10 Virginia charges until after he was done cooperating.
