The White House Correspondents Association on Friday condemned President Donald Trump's praise for a lawmaker's assault on a reporter, one of several groups representing journalists to denounce the president's latest affront to the First Amendment.

Gianforte later apologized to Jacobs and pledged a $50,000 donation to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Trump's remarks at a rally in Montana come amid an worldwide outcry over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist who has been missing since entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, whom the president has said is likely dead.

"I shouldn't say this", he said, then adding "there's nothing to be embarrassed about". Gianforte pleaded guilty to assault after he body slammed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs for asking a question on health care legislation.

Trump is on a three-state tour in the western part of the United States advocating for Republican candidates who are running for election in November with the hope of keeping control of the US Senate and House of Representatives in Republican hands.

Downing Street has indirectly criticised Donald Trump after he praised a Republican congressman for attacking a Guardian reporter, saying any violence or intimidation against journalists was "completely unacceptable".

Trump said he originally thought the assault - which took place on the eve of his election - might hurt Gianforte's chances.

Trump celebrated the episode as he introduced Montana Representative Greg Gianforte at a rally in Missoula, Montana, on Thursday evening. "And we endorsed Greg very early, but I had heard he body-slammed a reporter". The Guardian has also reacted to the news, noting that the USA president had applauded "the assault of an American journalist".

Trump's comments come amid an investigation into the presumed murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istambul more than two weeks ago. "President Trump should use his platform to condemn press freedom abuses at home and overseas, not cheer on physical assaults of reporters".

Gianforte pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault for the attack.

While outrage over Trump's remarks erupted on social media.
