In other cases, patients remain paralyzed. It follows a peculiar seasonal pattern, with the highest incidence occurring every other year in late summer or fall. Scientists are investigating a number of causes, including viruses, environmental toxins and genetic disorders, the CDC said on its website.

The 10 top local news stories from metro Boston and around New England delivered daily. Right now the CDC says the likelihood of someone developing AFM is one in 1 million. There have now been a total of 386 confirmed cases since 2014. The average age of affected patients is just four.

Federal health officials have issued an unusual warning about a growing number of cases of a polio-like illness called acute flaccid myelitis, also known as AFM.

CDC There have been 386 confirmed cases of acute flaccid myelitis in the USA since 2014.

Although some AFM patients tested positive for an enterovirus, indicating a possible link, not all had the virus.

What are the chances my child will get AFM?

"[The CDC] should make AFM reporting mandatory", said Gary, who also has a 2 ½ year-old daughter. But federal officials said that those viruses have not been linked to the USA outbreak over the past four years.

Health officials Arkansas and Oklahoma say a rare illness that's being compared to polio may have reached the states as it spreads across the U.S. "I am frustrated that despite all of our efforts, we haven't been able to identify the cause of this mystery illness".

Pardo-Villamizar said, "We don't know if the virus is attacking directly the spinal cord, or if the immune response against the virus is producing the damage to the spinal cord". There has been one AFM-related death, which happened in 2017. Glatter said the long-term effects of AFM are unclear at this time.

"In terms of the diseases I usually deal with, say if it's measles, we know the incubation period, we know the infectious period".

"AFM is a very rare and serious condition", Messonnier said, urging parents to take preventive steps such as encouraging hand washing, ensuring that children receive recommended vaccinations, and making sure they wear insect repellent. The paralysis sets in about a week after the children have come down with fever and respiratory illness.

"If children develop an upper-respiratory infection and there is any hint of muscle weakness, those patients need to be evaluated rapidly by a pediatrician and an emergency department", he said.

So far, the CDC has found no relationship between vaccines and children diagnosed with AFM from the 2014 cases.

Each year, doctors treat patients with enterovirus, which has many forms and often appears like a common cold.
