Cohen's lawyer Lanny Davis said that he took the decision after "putting his family and country first" and "distanced himself from the values of the Trump administration".

Cohen has flip-flopped between parties before, going from a Democrat to Republican in 2017 after being asked to serve as the GOP finance chair.

Cohen was formerly a registered Republican.

Cohen changed his registration online with the Albany-based New York State board of elections around noon, according to Axios.

"In New York state, the forfeiture of the right to vote doesn't follow the felony conviction but follows the felony incarceration", Erika Lorshbough, legislative counsel for the New York Civil Liberties Union, told NBC News.

"See, it was a little different in the old days", Trump continued.

He pleaded guilty to eight criminal counts in August, the same day Paul Manafort, the president's former campaign chairman was found guilty of bank fraud.

After years working for Trump, Cohen had a fairly public falling out with the president after federal investigators zeroed in on him, even implicating Trump when pleading guilty to federal campaign finance charges.

The move comes amid the souring ties between Trump and Cohen over adult actress Stormy Daniels' legal action against the duo over a Dollars 130,000 non-disclosure agreement, in which the porn star had agreed to stay quiet about her alleged affair with Trump.
