Michael made landfall on Wednesday afternoon near Mexico Beach, Fla.as a Category 4.

Even before Michael made full landfall, it was whipping trees with its winds and had caused flooding in the town of Apalachicola, where more than 1.5m of water was reported, and about 32km away in Port St Joe.

Smith said the situation was unsafe even for emergency personnel. "I didn't expect all this", said Bill Manning (63), a grocery clerk who left his camper van in Panama City to move into a hotel, where the power eventually went out.

The storm's center is now about 30 miles west of Augusta, Georgia, near the SC border. Some 125,000 homes were left without power in Georgia and over 52,000 homes in Alabama as of Wednesday evening.

In Seminole County, Georgia, a metal carport hoisted by the wind crashed through a roof, hitting a girl's head, the county's emergency management director Travis Brooks said.

The devastation inflicted by Hurricane Michael came into focus yesterday with rows upon rows of homes found smashed to pieces, and search-and-rescue crews struggled to reach the stricken areas in hopes of accounting for hundreds of people who defied evacuation orders.

The storm has killed at least 11 people, mostly from trees falling onto houses.

Based on wind speed, it was the fourth-strongest, behind the Labor Day storm (184 mph), Camille and Andrew in 1992.

Six Florida counties remain under curfews, as work crews try to push debris off of roads so utility and emergency crews can start to fix the damage and reach people who need help.

An estimated 6,000 evacuees took cover in emergency shelters, a lot of them in Florida, and that number was expected to swell to 20,000 across five states by week's end, Kieserman said.

Long said several hospitals in the Panhandle were hit by the hurricane and patients had to be evacuated. The storm hacked a trail of catastrophic destruction in Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia before finally heading back out over water.

Late yesterday Corelogic pegged the wind and storm surge insurance industry loss at up to $4.5 billion, although this was a pre-landfall assessment so did not factor in how the storm tracked after landfall.

At least 11 people have died from Hurricane Michael, which slammed into Florida's Panhandle with 155-mph winds on Wednesday.

Hurricane Michael weakened to tropical storm Thursday but remained a menace as it rolled across the Southeast, leaving two dead after tearing a path of devastation through the Florida Panhandle and parts of Georgia.

Large parts of Florida have suffered "unimaginable destruction" after the third-strongest hurricane in U.S. history slammed into the sunshine state. A hurricane warning has been discontinued for the Gulf coast of Florida. It was moving to the northeast at 23 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. Storm surge is worse now than it was 100 years ago, thanks to the rise in sea levels.

Emergency crews work to clear a street of debris during Hurricane Michael in Panama City Beach, Florida, U.S. October 10, 2018.

Where the capital markets could take another share is areas like reinsurance sidecars, which have already been seeing some losses from recent global catastrophe events, or private ILS quota shares, where investors can take a share of a re/insurers loss exposure to a storm like Michael.

A few blocks inland, about half the homes were reduced to piles of wood and siding and those still standing suffered heavy damage.

As the storm picked up, Roy said he began to get nervous, checking in on his parents and children every hour and sometimes every 15 minutes. A driver in North Carolina was killed when a tree fell on his auto.
