With razor thin margin, Brett Kavanaugh confirmed as US Supreme Court Justice

Protesters rallied against Brett Kavanaugh on Saturday as the Senate voted to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court.

McConnell blocked Democratic President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in 2016, arguing at the time that voters should have a say in the matter in that year's election.

Hours after the narrow Senate vote, Trump also said he is "100 percent certain" that Kavanaugh did not commit sexual assault, and that Democrats used Ford's story to mount a "horrible, terrible attack" on the nominee.

Trump, who called Kavanaugh to congratulate him on Saturday, said he was "100%" certain that Ford named the wrong person in accusing the judge.

Numerous lawmakers, including undecided Republican senators like Susan Collins and Jeff Flake, said they were appalled by Trump's behavior, but wound up voting for Kavanaugh anyway.

After threatening to vote no for Trump's tax bill in December, he eventually changed his mind to help the reform pass by a 51-48 margin. Republicans emerged confident that the FBI investigation into the allegations unearthed no new corroborating details.

"There is a special place in hell for women who cover for rapists", she said in an email blast after the vote.

The hurdle for Mr Kavanaugh's nomination came when Dr Ford accused him of drunkenly sexually assaulting her at a high school gathering in 1982.

Senators have been confronted by protesters who oppose the Kavanaugh nomination and police at the U.S. Capitol have arrested hundreds of demonstrators.

When Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the vote, exited the Senate, he was booed and heckled by onlookers outside until he ducked into his limousine.

Ford testified in the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh had drunkenly attacked her at a party when they were teenagers in the early 1980s.

"The scope of the FBI's. investigation was determined not by the administration but by us, this group", he said.

With next month's crucial mid-term elections on the horizon, analysts will be looking to see whether it influences the vote.

"What I did was entirely consistent with what the history of Senate has been in that situation going back to 1880", McConnell replied.

Kavanaugh becomes the nation's 114th Supreme Court justice and President Trump's second appointment to the court, creating a conservative majority on the nation's highest court for years to come.

McConnell told The Associated Press in an interview that the "mob" of opposition - confronting senators in the hallways and at their homes - united his narrowly divided GOP majority as Kavanaugh's confirmation teetered and will give momentum to his party this fall. But we didn't attack the nominee, we didn't go on a search and destroy mission'. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations.

But before reporters dug into that, she was asked about her husband calling African countries "shitholes", saying "I never heard him saying those comments".

One Democrat, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, voted for Kavanaugh.

In the meantime, the focus will be on the court's new majority's willingness to take on controversial issues. We have to treat each with respect and dignity and a sense of amicability that the rest of the world doesn't always share, " Sotomayor said.

Kavanaugh was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts shortly after the vote.

"We're taking back Maine's Senate seat, and claiming it for someone who knows how to listen to her constituents", tweeted Mainers for Accountable Leadership, which organized protests at Collins' office. "If they won't listen to our voices, then they'll listen to our vote". All these angry people know that these people sitting in the Senate are making these decisions.
