Sen. Collins to reveal how she'll vote on Kavanaugh

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, meaning that if all Senate Democrats oppose Mr Kavanaugh, Mr Trump can not afford to lose more than one Republican vote for his nominee, with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tiebreaking vote. See photos and video.

Susan Collins' announcement hours later that she would vote to confirm President Donald Trump's nominee all but cemented Kavanaugh's spot on the court.

Republican Senator Susan Collins and Joe Manchin, a Democrat, both indicated their backing for the judge on Friday. But Manchin said little Thursday and Friday to indicate what his final vote would be, after studying the Federal Bureau of Investigation report addressing allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against the nominee.

The dramatic Senate floor announcement by perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican ended most of the suspense over a tortuous, election-season battle that had left Kavanaugh's fate in doubt for almost a month after the first accusation against him.

Kavanaugh, a judge on the Washington, D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, clerked for Justice Kennedy and has written dozens of opinions cited by the Supreme Court. After the testimony, the White House asked the FBI to launch an investigation into Ford's allegations, which was completed in under a week. "I have been wrestling to-to really try to know what is fair and what is right and the truth is none of this has been fair", Murkowski said Friday, adding, "I believe we are dealing with issues that are bigger than a nominee".

Among them were three of the chamber's moderate Republicans, Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat up for re-election in conservative West Virginia. Every Democrat but one, Sen.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Mr Kavanaugh represents "a hard-right, conservative jurisprudence, far, far away from what average Americans believe".

A vote on confirmation could happen as early as Saturday. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted present because of the absence of a colleague, Steve Danies of Montana, who was at his daughter's wedding, but said she would have voted no.

Unsurprisingly, people have dug up that old tweet and are now using it point out Collins' apparent hypocrisy regarding her position on Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh gives the conservatives their first reliable majority on the nine-person panel since the mid-20th century, and though Democrats could attempt to impeach the judge in the future, they will need two-thirds backing in Senate, something that is considered unlikely unless new firm allegations come to light. In any case, Vice President Mike Pence is reportedly on standby in Washington in case he needs to break a tie in the Senate.
