Teenager Shaw's debut ton puts West Indies on backfoot

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant fell eight runs short of his second Test century - he scored his first against England last month - but Ravindra Jadeja made a ton before the hosts declared on 649-9.

India´s Ravindra Jadeja celebrates after reaching his century (100 runs) during the second day´s play of the first Test cricket match between India and West Indies at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium in Rajkot on October 5, 2018.

However, there was some early celebration for the Windies when Gabriel struck Rahul in front with the sixth ball of the match with just three runs on the board.

Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo claimed four wickets in an otherwise toothless West Indies bowling attack.

Rajkot: West Indies lost Shai Hope for 17 runs, but Kieran Powell continued his good form as he neared a half-century.

Any hopes that West Indies had of finding further immediate breakthroughs were then dashed as Shaw and Pujara combined in a 206-run second wicket stand to consolidate the innings.

The all-rounder though had a near-miss moment on the field when he playfully waited to run out Shimron Hetmyer who was scampering back to reach the non-striker's end. "I was just walking at the stumps, and I didn't think he (Hetmyer) will start running", jadeja said with a smile.

India vs West Indies day 1 of 1st Test will telecast on the Star Sports Network.

Kohli, who was 72 not out overnight, became the second fastest to 24 Test hundreds behind only Donald Bradman, who took 66 innings to Kohli's 123.

All told, the right-hander faced 230 balls and counted 10 fours, posting his fourth triple figure score this year and moving into fourth place on the all-time list of India century-makers.

He put on 55 for the ninth wicket with Umesh Yadav (22) before the declaration came at tea.
