Pence details Chinese election-meddling claims in speech

"A new consensus on China is rising across America", Pence said. He also accused China of targeting industries and states that would play an important role in the November midterms and demanding that Hollywood portray China in a positive light, threatening studios and producers with punishment if they don't.

Vice-President Mike Pence speaks at the Hudson Institute in Washington.

Pence's speech comes a week after Trump accused China during a meeting of the U.N. Security Council of interfering in American elections to help his Democratic rivals.

China's Defence Ministry said a Chinese naval ship had been sent to warn the U.S. vessel to leave and that Beijing had irrefutable sovereignty in the area. He said that in response, Beijing is using its power "to interfere in the domestic policies of this country and to interfere in the politics of the United States".

He accuses China of threatening "to deny a business license for a major US corporation if it refused to speak out against our administration's policies".

China's Defense Ministry said a Chinese naval ship had been sent to warn the USA vessel to leave and that Beijing had irrefutable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and the waters around them. But Pence said that a senior member of the intelligence community recently told him that "what the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country".

"If I tell you that you are going to lose some of your business, you do not want to wait five years to find out what you are going to have as compensation to be able to manage your finances and knowing where you are investing", Bachand said.

China expert Chris Johnson, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst now at Washington's Centre for Strategic and International Studies, said Pence's speech appeared aimed in part at building a narrative that a vote for the Democrats would be a vote for China.

Trump appears to be gearing up for a protracted trade war, declaring earlier this week that "it's too early to talk" with China. He says the fight wasn't really about trade between the two countries.

'We will continue to take action until Beijing ends the theft of American intellectual property and stops the predatory practice of forced technology transfer, ' Pence said.

Google declined comment, except to reiterate that its China search engine project was "exploratory" and not close to launch.

The speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington represented some of the most critical remarks about China by such a high-ranking US official in recent memory.

He accused China of "reckless harassment" because of an incident on Sunday in which a Chinese naval vessel almost collided with a U.S. destroyer, the Decatur, near the Spratly islands.

"If they see a demand for their milk, we could see an uptick in cottonseed prices", explained Newby.

China said a Chinese warship had been sent to warn the United States vessel to leave an area of irrefutable Chinese sovereignty.

China has said Xinjiang faces a serious threat from Islamist militants and separatists who plot attacks and stir up tensions.

Trudeau also signaled he's still interested in wooing Beijing.

Representative Frank Pallone of New Jersey, the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the report "is deeply disturbing and Congress must investigate". Trump had been highly critical of the prior NAFTA agreement since before he ran for president.
