NASA Wants the Moon Again As Agency Turns 60

The massive lander is a single-stage reusable system capable of accommodating a crew of four and 2,000 pounds of cargo on the surface of the Moon for up to two weeks. It is created to carry out missions that would see it land on the surface of the Moon for up to 14 days before returning to the Gateway ready to be used again. Key to accomplishing this goal is a lunar orbiting space station called Gateway, which will serve as a refueling station and launch platform for manned lunar exploration missions.

'This lander could be used to establish a surface base, deliver scientific or commercial cargo, and conduct extraordinary exploration of the Moon'.

Exposure to galactic cosmic radiation during deep space travel, such as to Mars, might significantly damage gastrointestinal functions in astronauts, say researchers, led by one of an Indian-origin.

Earlier this week, Blue Origin announced it is partnering with the European Space Agency, Airbus and other companies for an global "Moon Race" competition, encouraging groups to develop sustainable technology for a lunar base.

"We're not content with just leaving behind footprints", he said, during the 30-minute speech, reiterating the Trump administration's objective of "establishing a permanent presence around and on the Moon". "The SLS will be the largest and most powerful rocket ever built - all this energy, all this force, will lift American astronauts to space aboard the Orion capsule", Pence explained. The first Blue Moon mission to the lunar surface could take place by as early as 2023, company executives have said.

According to the new agreement, which was announced on Wednesday, NASA will contribute a laser retroreflector array to aid with ground tracking and support in mission communication.
