USA indicts seven Russian intel officers in alleged doping scandal hack

Three of the seven officials that are named in this specific indictment (Yermakov, Malyshev and Badin) were also named by Mueller as interfering in the 2016 U.S. election. They also claimed the seven men were involved in leaking Olympic athletes' drug-test data and in an attack on a Pennsylvania nuclear energy company.

It was felt that the public in the west had no inkling of the scale of the Russian hacking operation. "We are not seeking to escalate, but we will defend ourselves, partly by shining a light and partly by sharing the information we have in a new way".

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly and angrily rejected similar charges.

"State-sponsored hacking and disinformation campaigns pose serious threats to our security and to our open society", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement Thursday.

The GRU campaign ran from December 2014 until at least May 2018, targeting USA persons, corporations and global organisations based on their strategic interest to the Russian government, officials said.

Russian Federation was banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics in a massive doping scandal. As a result, 111 Russian athletes were banned from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2016, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) was hacked and documents were subsequently published online.

In a series of coordinated announcements, authorities in the US, UK, the Netherlands and Australia have accused the Russian military intelligence agency GRU of a huge array of cyberattacks around the world.

According to a Justice Department press release, a grand jury in Pennsylvania sent the indictment, which says that beginning around December 2014 and up through May 2018, the operatives conducted sophisticated computer hacking operations that affected people in the US, corporations, global organizations and their employees around the world, "based on their strategic interest to the Russian government". Its old acronym - GRU -is still more widely used.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has identified that a number of cyber actors widely known to have been conducting cyber attacks around the world are, in fact, the GRU.

Fancy Bear is a nickname for a GRU hacking group. In some instances, WADA documents were altered, officials said.

According to authorities, Russian nationals flooded the media with the private medical information of 250 athletes from 30 countries.

The rap sheet was lengthened today when it blamed the country for the BadRabbit ransomware attack of October 2017, the hack on anti-doping agency WADA and the hack and leak of documents against the Democratic National Committee during the USA presidential election campaign two years ago.

An official from the Russian embassy escorted them to The Hague, he said.

"I also hope that responsible members of the worldwide news media will cast a suspecting eye on future "hack and leak" operations which seek in part to manipulate stories in furtherance of Russian state interests", Demers said. Those were Minin, Sotnikov, Serebriakov and Morenets. They've been charged with offences including computer hacking, wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering.

A Russian military intelligence (GRU) spying operation on the body responsible for investigating chemical weapons was thwarted by Dutch and United Kingdom authorities in April of this year.

Four agents from the GRU military intelligence service were ejected from the Netherlands immediately after the attempted breach was intercepted on April 13 this year, major-general Onno Eichelsheim, director of the military intelligence service MIVD, told a press conference in The Hague.

He said: "The Dutch government finds the involvement of these intelligence operatives extremely worrisome". The Russians left behind their rental auto.

At the end of December, the Obama administration expels 35 Russian diplomats and shuts down two Russian intelligence compounds as the Kremlin continues to deny a roll in the summer's cyber attacks.
