He began his career founding a design consultancy in 2003 that focused on graphic, interaction and exhibition design. Systrom and Krieger may be selling the idea of Instagram being in safe hands with Mosseri, but Recode noted that the move comes at a time Zuckerberg "seems to be tightening control on all Facebook's standalone apps, including Instagram".

The pair announced their resignation from Instagram last week.

In a blog post, the company's said Mosseri will oversee all functions of the business and will recruit a new executive team. "We're confident that under Adam's leadership, Instagram will evolve and improve and we look forward to the future of the product and community".

Krieger and Systrom announded the succession in a blog post, effective today. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also wielded Instagram Stories as the most devastating weapon in his ongoing war against Snapchat, as Instagram's live story feature has long-since eclipsed Snapchat's entire active user base. Last week, the company announced a serious data breach impacting 50 million users.

Since buying Instagram for $1 billion in 2012, Facebook has reportedly curtailed its autonomy, insisting on a link to Facebook from within the Instagram app and removing Instagram's branding from photos shared on Facebook.

The co-founders of Instagram, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, have resigned and are leaving the photo-sharing app company. "We believe that Adam will hold true to these values and that Instagram will continue to thrive", Systrom and Krieger further said reiterating that Instagram will continue to put its users first.

But amid reported "clashes" with Mark Zuckerberg, Systrom and Krieger chose to leave the app and Facebook behind, taking only lots and lots of money with them.

Instagram is generally seen as a more uplifting space and remains popular with teenagers and young people, which has been a challenge for Facebook.
