Hurricane Rosa off Mexico could bring flooding, rip currents in US

Hurricane Rosa was a Category 4 hurricane on Thursday but was downgraded to a Category 2 by Friday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Rosa, with maximum sustained winds decreasing to nearly 120 miles per hour (195 kph), was now a Category 3 storm, coming down a notch on the five-step Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The rain could lessen as the storm moves toward Arizona, but it could also bring a small dust storm Sunday evening.

Later next week, Hurricane Rosa is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it passes over California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.

Previously a powerful Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 miles per hour, Rosa weakened over the weekend and is expected to bring potentially heavy rain, blustery winds and thunderstorms to the Valley from Sunday through Tuesday, forecasters said.

Hurricane Rosa is shown from a National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) GOES East satelite over the eastern Pacific Ocean on September 27, 2018, in this image provided September 28, 2018.

All that rain can lead to life-threatening flash flooding in the deserts, forecasters said.

There's more rain on the way, but this time it's not from a monsoon storm.

Kirk had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was located about 270 miles south-southeast of Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Rosa is expected to bring us rain as well as some potential flash flooding.
