Four Vietnamese are passengers on plane crash near Papua New Guinea

"The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is providing assistance to nine Filipino seafarers who were onboard the Air Niugini flight that crash landed in Micronesia", the department said in a statement.

He said it's a good thing that so many people use boats to travel and were able to quickly help with the rescue. Everyone made it off alive.

'It was just surreal.

Bill Jaynes, managing editor of a Micronesia-based newspaper, was on the plane when it hit the water.

Jaynes said those aboard managed to wade through waist-deep water to the emergency exits on the sinking plane.

"I was really impressed with the locals who immediately started coming out in boats", he said in an interview with a missionary in Chuuk, Matthew Colson, that was posted online and shared with the AP. "One would think they might be afraid of approaching the plane that's just crashed".

His age and nationality is unknown, but Air Niugini says it is working with local authorities, hospitals and investigators to try and find him.

Air Niugini issued a brief statement via Twitter shortly after the crash.

"Local authorities and the airline are continuing to investigate the location of the unaccounted passenger".

The DFA also noted that one passenger is missing, but the other 46 passengers were safe.

It could have been much worse.

Locals in the Federated States of Micronesia were quick to react and by that saved lives when an aircraft overshot a runway and plunged into a lagoon.

In the "Miracle on the Hudson", both engines on a U.S. Airways jet failed after it struck a flock of geese during takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport.

"I thought we landed hard until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water coming in".

Flight PX73 was making a scheduled stop at Chuuk International Airport on the way from Pohnpei to Port Moresby on Friday, September 28.

A special Air Niugini flight departed Port Moresby early this morning as planned, and a support team is now on the ground in Chuuk assessing the condition and immediate needs of the passengers and crew. Chuuk is in the Caroline Islands between the Northern Mariana Islands to the north and Papua New Guinea to the south.

The AIC website details an incident involving the aircraft in May this year when a Hercules operated by a freight company clipped the 737's wing while taxiing, causing "significant damage".

Micronesia is a constitutional government in free association with the United States; achieved independence in 1986.

The aircraft was configured for 158 passengers in two classes.
