World fraternity laughs off Trumps administration remarks in UNGA speech

For years, President Donald Trump made the claim that the United States had become a laughingstock around the world.

"Didn't expect that reaction, but that's okay", the United States president said attempting to deflect it. His denunciations of globalism drew murmurs from other members of the organization that stands as the very embodiment of the notion. "We are standing up for America and the American people, and we are also standing up for the world", he said.

The overarching theme for Trump's speech was "America first", a theme he's repeated throughout his presidency.

He referenced a long list of United Nations initiatives, from the International Criminal Court to the Human Rights Council, that his administration is working to undermine.

With cable news chyrons flashing breathless updates about both Beltway dramas, news of Trump's foreign policy moves from the United Nations, led by a new trade deal with South Korea, struggled to break through and disappointed White House aides.

His imprint on the president's speech could not be mistaken.

Trump saved his strongest condemnation for the International Criminal Court.

Trump also thanked South Korean leader Moon Jae-In, Japanese President Shinzo Abe, and Chinese President Xi Jinping for their efforts.

"It is ironic that the USA government doesn't even hide its plan for overthrowing the same government it invites to talks", he said.

"As we see in Jordan, the most compassionate policy is to place refugees as close to their homes as possible to ease their eventual return to be part of the rebuilding process", he said.

Trump said the bad policies helped create an $800 billion US trade deficit. "As far as America is concerned, the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy and no authority", he said. He apparently targeted some Gulf allies as freeloaders without specifically naming any country in particular.

"We defend many of these nations for nothing and then they take advantage of us by giving us high oil prices".

To that end, Trump flaunted his embrace of negotiations with North Korea's Kim Jong Un just a year after he had warned of raining down "total destruction" on a leader he branded "Little Rocket Man". Those tensions have since eased.

For Iran, Trump reinforced his decision to abandon the 2015 nuclear treaty and reimpose sanctions on the country - and said there will be more sanctions to punish the regime.

"We ask all nations to isolate Iran's regime as long as its aggression continues", Trump said.

Trump's pullout from the deal was met with intense criticism from world leaders, especially those of the other countries - Britain, France, Germany, China, and Russian Federation - that brokered the accord.

Indeed, Western allies have not embraced the message of sovereignty, which has traditionally been pushed by states like Russia, China, Iran and North Korea as a self-defense tactic.

Shortly before he spoke, in fact, U.N. Secretary-General Guterres had defended worldwide co-operation as the only way to tackle the challenges and threats of increasingly chaotic times. "Our future rests on solidarity", he said. "Multilateralism is under fire precisely when we need it most".

Trump, meanwhile, believes that worldwide collaboration has resulted in the USA being swindled.

He said problems would best be solved by dialogue, but that dialogue had to be a two-way street. Other countries did not grant that same access.

"We are working with countries that import Iranian crude oil to cut their purchases substantially", Trump said.
