Environment Canada has confirmed that the Ottawa area was hit by two tornadoes late Friday afternoon.

At one point more than 200,000 hydro customers were blacked out, but as of Sunday morning, the Hydro Ottawa and Hydro Quebec websites reported the number had been reduced to fewer than 80,000 - 70,000 in the Ottawa area and 8,300 in the Outaouais region, which encompasses Gatineau.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board both said they are closing all schools on Monday.Employees with the federal government have been told to stay home.

Dunrobin suffered the worst of the storm, with 60 buildings damaged and several taken right to the ground.

Residents of the Ottawa region are facing widespread power outages and school closures after two tornadoes struck on Friday.

Another Ottawa resident, Erin Blaskie, had the same charitable idea, tweeting out a photo of a pot of chili saying anyone without a hot meal could message her for her address, while In Kanata North, Karen Woods opened up her home to people who needed a shower or their batteries recharged.

One of those patients arrived this morning, the hospital noted. As the skies grew ominously dark, they heard what sounded like a huge truck engine revving in their backyard, and then their ears popped with the change in air pressure. They gathered their cats and dogs and ran for the basement, but just as they reached the door to the lower floor, the kitchen window imploded, sending glass flying to the front of the house.

Anthony Di Monte, general manager of the City of Ottawa's Emergency and Protective Service, said that more than 400 traffic lights continue to be out. More than 3,000 people were fed hot meals on Saturday at a community centre in the suburb or Barrhaven.

I plan to visit the impacted areas tomorrow, wanting to respect the first responders and hydro crews who today are working hard on their plan to restore power to the impacted homes and businesses and help those who are displaced. And private companies have donated dumpsters for the disposal of food that is rotting in unpowered refrigerators.

A powerful tornado that carved a path through parts of Canada's capital snapped trees, tossed cars and obliterated dozens of homes leaving what the city's mayor on Saturday said resembled "a war scene".
