Patriots almost traded Gronk to Lions before draft

Patriots vs Lions report card Grading New England's defense

Rob Gronkowski confirmed a report yesterday, that stated he was nearly traded to the Detroit Lions, but the deal never happened because he threatened to retire.

And after the loss, Gronkowski confirmed the report - and all of the other ones, even - as being the truth. The five-time Pro Bowler is said to have declined calls from Detroit, now coached by Matt Patricia - the former Patriots defensive coordinator - as New England worked to craft a stunning trade in the days leading up to this year's National Football League draft.

Gronkowski wouldn't have reported to any team.

"Yeah, it happened", Gronkowski said.

"Brady's my quarterback", Gronkowski said. "I wasn't going anywhere without Brady".

The tight end explained his reasoning, and it was quite simple: He didn't want to run routes for anybody but Tom Brady. The tight end believed he should get a new deal from New England, but the Patriots did not sound inclined to pony up a bunch of additional guaranteed money for a guy with his injury history.

There's no way you can tell me he didn't see them either. "People shouldn't be able to do that".

Ahead of the 2018 season, the Patriots' reworked Gronkowski's contract, adding $4.3 million in incentives, including $1 million per-game roster bonuses.

Over the first two games, he has caught passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
