Feinstein said she had not come forward sooner to protect the identity of Ford, who had stressed in the letter that she wanted the matter to be handed confidentially.

She said it's "shocking but not surprising" that President Trump does not believe that the FBI should investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh.

Christine Blasey Ford, the California psychologist who accuses Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were in high school, has become the target of "vicious harassment" and death threats, her lawyers said, prompting supporters to raise money for her security.

All 11 GOP members of the Judiciary Committee are men, a dynamic that some in the party have acknowledged could work against them.

Twenty-four women who attended the Holton-Arms School with Christine Blasey Ford have signed and sent a letter of support for her to Congress. John Cornyn (R-TX), as questions seemed to be raised about whether a politically explosive hearing would take place next Monday as scheduled.

Now, according to Politico, the committee Republicans are offering her a Wednesday hearing in which Ford testifies first if her lawyers respond by the end of the day Friday.

"Don't get rattled by all of this, we're going to plow right through it and do our job", he said to applause from the crowd. "A proper investigation must be completed, witnesses interviewed, evidence reviewed, and all sides spoken to".

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa said Tuesday morning that he had yet to hear back from Ford.

Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge, was nominated by President Trump in July to fill the vacancy left by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. "I think the Republicans have had the upper hand this week, because it started with this shocker on Sunday in the Washington Post".

The disturbing accusations threw a wrench into Kavanaugh's confirmation to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, which initially appeared to be a slam dunk for Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) has offered Ford the chance to testify in a closed hearing.

Ford's attorneys say she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she testifies. Ford has listed a set of requirements for her to testify.

Senators "will look at what she had to say from 36 years ago. and we will see what happens". In response to my invitation, however, you wrote yesterday that "an FBI investigation of the incident should be the first step in addressing her allegations". "Not only does it disadvantage her, it victimizes her", Hirono said.

Hill also writes of the difficulty Ford will face testifying about her assault allegation on national television, and that she will be "outresourced" while testifying in front of the committee.
