Report says Ticketmaster works with scalpers, fans end up paying more

Ticketmaster recruits scalpers to promote resale business, undercover investigation reports

Any music fan knows scalping is a huge issue, and this new, explosive CBC article demonstrates the extent to which Ticketmaster is partnering with professional ticket resellers and not just helping concertgoers sell extra seats to performances they can not attend.

The allegations centre around an undercover investigation which saw a pair of reporters attend Las Vegas ticketing convention Ticket Summit 2018 in July.

It's hard enough to buy tickets on Ticketmaster when tens of thousands of people are trying to secure perhaps only 5,000-10,000 tickets at major musical and/or sporting events, but it's made much harder when the company providing those tickets is obscenely obsessed with profit. "Doing half a million, or whatever".

"We've spent millions of dollars on this tool". Live Nation agreed to pay ticketing company Songkick $110 million and to buy some of its assets, including an anti-scalping algorithm. Posing as a small-time scalper from Canada, Cribb talks to a representative from Ticketmaster's resale arm.

Though Ticketmaster appeared to be promoting TradeDesk at the convention, the CBC points out there is no mention of the reseller program on Ticketmaster's website or corporate reports. "The last thing we'd want to do is get brokers caught up to where they can't sell inventory with us", he said. But even this is not an infallible system as it is entirely possible for the professional scalpers to game this system as well. "It helps manage large inventories".

In an explosive plot twist of M. Night Shayamalan proportions, it turns out Ticketmaster may have been secretly working with scalpers to rip us off this whole time!

Through the platform, scalpers are able to resell their tickets through a platform that gives a cut of the resale fee back to the company.

In footage obtained by the journalists, a man purported to be a TradeDesk sales representative told them that the scalpers he works with have "literally a couple of hundred" Ticketmaster.com accounts apiece - a violation of Ticketmaster's own terms of use - through which they can buy huge swaths of tickets for resale, and that Ticketmaster's "buyer abuse" division does not investigate at least some TradeDesk users.

According to CBC, "if Ticketmaster collects $25.75 on a $209.50 ticket on the initial sale, when the owner posts it for resale for $400 on the site, the company stands to collect an additional $76 on the same ticket".

This all benefits Ticketmaster because of its fees.

It is categorically untrue that Ticketmaster has any program in place to enable resellers to acquire large volumes of tickets at the expense of consumers.

Casey Klein, Ticketmaster Resale director, held a session that was closed to the media called "We appreciate your partnership: More brokers are listing with Ticketmaster than ever before".
