Kavanaugh Accuser Faces Death Threats, Asks for FBI Investigation Before Testifying

President Trump says Brett Kavanaugh has an"unblemished record but says he wants to hear from Kavanaugh's accuser Christine Blasey Ford who says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her

But he said the accusation that surfaced at the tail end of the Supreme Court confirmation process was "hurting somebody's life". In the letter he said he did not see any "improper conduct" by Kavanaugh, a classmate at Georgetown Preparatory School, according to CNN, which obtained a copy of the letter.

He added that Kavanaugh was "anxious" to answer the accusations against him, while acknowledging that the testimony would hold up his confirmation. "But I think politically speaking, the senators will do a very good job".

"There must be an agreement on witnesses, and the FBI should be given time to reopen its background check investigation into Judge Kavanaugh", Schumer said.

But Jones says the FBI is well-equipped to conduct a quick investigation and interview potential witnesses.

"Asking her to come forward in four or five days and sit before the Judiciary Committee on national TV is not a fair process", Banks said.

The president assailed California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein for not disclosing the allegations when she first learned of them in July.

Why is the Senate setting a deadline?

They say she can testify in a private session if she wishes. "Monday is her opportunity", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday.

"I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

One of the reactions to Christine Blasey Ford's request that the FBI investigate her claim that Brett Kavanaugh attempted to sexually assault her at a party back in high school has been that the FBI doesn't do investigations like that. "We're ready to hear anything she has to say".

Grassley rejected that idea Wednesday.

Republican staffers on the Judiciary panel have interviewed Kavanaugh and sought an interview with Ford.

"Look, if she shows up and makes a credible showing that'll be very interesting", Trump told reporters as he left the White House to survey flood damage in North Carolina.

A special hearing on the claim was set for Monday but Ms. Blasey Ford's lawyer said she won't testify until the FBI investigates the sexual assault. Others have suggested that Ford may be confused about her story and has gotten her facts "mixed up".

September 23, 1991: Biden says in a statement reported in the Times that this is the date on which Hill agreed to allow the FBI to investigate the allegations.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley responded that there's no need for an FBI investigation and that the invitation for Ms Ford to testify on Monday still stands. But he also seemed to support Republican arguments that the confirmation vote should move ahead quickly, noting that they'd already delayed the vote a week.

Senator Lindsey Graham has accused Democrats of using their calls for an FBI investigation as a ploy. Trump blasted Democrats, and in particular Sen.

Clinton says that makes it hard to "avoid the appearance of insult" against Ford.

Republican leader John Cornyn of Texas noted that Ford has admitted she doesn't remember some details of the incident.

"I hope that Dr. Ford will reconsider and testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday", Collins wrote on her Twitter account. Kavanaugh has denied the incident, and he and Judge both deny being at the party in question.

Democrats have called for a full FBI investigation of the allegations, however, saying the Monday hearing will be too soon. Hill questions whether the Senate hearing "is going to be anything more than just a sham proceeding".

October 23, 1991: Thomas is sworn in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court.

The FBI was involved originally since it handles part of the background checks for presidential nominations of Supreme Court justices.

Katz also wrote that since the professor went public with her accusations, she has been a "target of vicious harassment and even death threats".
