Trump says he wants a "full process" to investigate the allegations.

Feinstein had been in possession of the letter since July, but did not question Kavanaugh about its contents before or during his appearances before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news. But the president is predicting that it will "work out very well".

Kavanaugh denies the allegation, but his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, came back with an offer to testify publicly to Congress. Kavanaugh did the same. Democrats on the panel refused to take part, arguing that the FBI should investigate the allegations stemming from an incident Ford says happened at a party in the early 1980s when they were both students in high school.

A Judiciary Committee vote on Kavanaugh's nomination is scheduled for Thursday.

Asked on NBC's Today show on Monday if Ford would testify, lawyer Debra Katz replied: "She is". It does not appear the Senate Judiciary Committee is willing to allow that to happen.

Women who signed the letter said they didn't know about or recall the party Ford described, and they said her account of a "stumbling drunk" Kavanaugh didn't jibe with their memories of a boy who drank some beer alongside them but never lost control or crossed a line with girls. Even if the allegations are true, she does not believe they should disqualify the nominee, "because I don't think that's the kind of life that he's led".

In his statement, Grassley said he was working on "a way to hear [Ford] out in an appropriate, precedented and respectful manner".

Kavanaugh has been unequivocal in denying Ford's accusation, and Sen. "Dianne Feinstein", because of the senator's rank on the Judiciary Committee.

Ford claims that Kavanaugh forced himself on her at a high school party in the 1980s, pinning her to a bed and attempting to undress her. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, also called for slowing the process. Now, with 23 women in the Senate - including four on the judiciary committee - and the backdrop of the #MeToo movement, Kavanaugh's future as a Supreme Court justice is in uncharted territory.

In 2002, she married Russell Ford, in Half Moon Bay, Calif., according to a marriage announcement from the time. Ford's husband, Russell Ford, said he recalled his wife using Kavanaugh's last name and expressing concern that Kavanaugh - then a federal judge - might someday be nominated to the Supreme Court.

Specifically, the countdown clock until Election Day in November, when Republicans' majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate could be in peril. "She is willing to do whatever it takes to get her story forth".

Conway later tweeted that Kavanaugh is "willing to add to his dozens of hours of sworn testimony". The White House has been adamant that it does not plan to withdraw Kavanaugh's nomination. "As a school that empowers women to use their voices, we are proud of this alumna for using hers", Jones said.

During a 10-minute phone call with Sen.

"Judge Kavanaugh is one of the finest people I have ever known", Trump told reporters from the Oval Office. But the president says Kavanaugh's nomination is "on track".

Mr. Judge has said the incident never happened. After 35 years it is almost impossible to conduct a full or fair investigation. She says they covered her mouth, turned up music to muffle her screams, and says she feared they'd inadvertently kill her. If she were to vote against Kavanaugh, the opposition of another Republican could block his nomination. Given the politics, given energized women voters, given the new climate about sexual harassment, "it's very important that they give due respect to Dr. Ford". "She believes that these allegations obviously bear on his character and his fitness, and the denials of course bear on his character and fitness".

During a television interview, Sen.

Hatch told Utah's Deseret News newspaper that "there's no question in my mind she was coached by special interest groups", adding: "Her story's too contrived".

I hope this does not collapse into simply another partisan issue, because attempted rape is neither a Republican nor Democratic badge of merit.

Which way Kavanaugh's nomination goes - to the high court or down in defeat - is all about the math of votes in the 100-member Senate. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, at first said he would seek private interviews with both Kavanaugh and Ford, an idea that was endorsed by top Republican leaders.

White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway told reporters Monday that Ford "should not be ignored or insulted; she should be heard".

"This is not a politically motivated action", she said. Ford requested to remain anonymous at the time, and Feinstein did nothing with the information. Ford came forward in a September 16 interview with the Washington Post.

In a statement, Sen.

Republicans have not settled on the strategy, the person familiar with the situation said, but were weighing options, including doing nothing.
