'Trying to attack me': Kavanaugh accuser reveals details of alleged sexual misconduct

Ilyse Hogue, the president of NARAL, said that the Judiciary Committee that is overseeing Kavanaugh's nomination is not in a position to obtain a credible denial from the nominee in the face of Ford's allegation. Ford discussed the incident, which occurred in the early 1980's when both she and Kavanaugh were in high school.

Heitkamp said the "very serious" allegations should be "thoroughly investigated" by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Kavanaugh's accuser, California professor Christine Blasey Ford, should be given the opportunity to testify.

Kavanaugh repeated that the allegation was "completely false". Ford said that Kavanaugh covered her mouth his his hand when she attempted to scream. The panel would also likely seek testimony from Judge, Kavanaugh's friend and classmate who Ford says jumped on top of her. Judge has denied that the incident happened.

With Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation still in the balance, Republicans on the hill and in Trump's White House are scurrying to try to discredit Ford's story the best they can.

"This woman should not be insulted and she should not be ignored", Conway said in an interview with Fox News.

What does Ford say happened? .

"In weighing her privacy and the consequences to herself and her family, she has demonstrated her willingness to risk these factors to present the truth", Eshoo said. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, was trying to arrange separate, follow-up calls with Kavanaugh and Ford, but just for aides to Grassley and Sen.

Because Trump's fellow Republicans control a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, Democrats can not stop Kavanaugh's appointment unless some Republicans make a rare decision to break with their party and vote against Trump.

Ford, a psychology professor in California, claims that at a party in the 1980s when she was 15, Kavanaugh, 17 at the time, and a friend drunkenly cornered her in a bedroom and allegedly pinned her down, groped her, and attempted to pull off her clothes.

The accuser, Christine Blassey Ford, is "willing to do whatever it takes to get her story forth", her attorney Debra Katz told NBC on Monday. "I did not do this back in high school or at any time", he said.

"Victims of sexual assault have the right to decide whether and when to come forward", Banks said about her client.

"Through the more than 35 years we have known him, Brett has stood out for his friendship, character, and integrity", the letter said.

When Anita Hill accused then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991, there were four women in the Senate and none on the Senate judiciary committee.

"Her recollection of these events is crystal clear", Ford's attorney Lisa Banks told Morning Edition.

The committee's 10 Democratic members want to delay the planned vote and allow for an FBI investigation before the panel moves forward. She contacted her congressmember and The Washington Post through a tip line.

Sen. Susan Collins, one of the Republicans her own party has been working to ensure votes for Kavanaugh, tweeted that she wants both Ford and Kavanaugh to testify under oath in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Specifically, at Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Senator Patrick Leahy, (D-Vermont) asked Kavanaugh about information he received that had been taken from files stolen by Manuel Miranda from Democrats including Leahy himself.

Something to remember, though, the public doesn't confirm Supreme Court justices, Congress does.

Sixty-five women who knew Mr Kavanagh in high school defended him in another letter, circulated by Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans, as someone who "always treated women with decency and respect".
