London Mayor Pushes For Second Brexit Vote

"It's really important that this is not a re-run of the referendum but the British public having a say for the first time on the outcome", Mr Khan told the BBC.

Mr Johnson has always been critical of Mrs May's Chequers plan, resigning in July alongside then-Brexit Secretary David Davis. Writing in the newspaper, he raised questions on the handling of Brexit negotiations by the Theresa May government.

The Prime Minister delivered the warning to her political opponents - including her ex-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

The stark prediction came as a French government official said that President Emmanuel Macron wanted to nail down the key terms of the future deal now, rather than allow any ambiguous drift on the major issues after 29 March 2019.

"Barnier is being creative in offering concessions in the text that seem to go the British way but in fact don't change the reality", one European Union diplomat said.

In his latest column, Mr Johnson focused on Northern Ireland and how the issue was "being used to coerce the United Kingdom into becoming a vassal state of Brussels".

Although she is signed up to the principle of a backstop if no better arrangement can be agreed, Mrs May has robustly rejected the version put forward by Brussels, which would see Northern Ireland remain within the European Union customs area and effectively draw a customs border down the Irish Sea.

He also said the plan would mean the United Kingdom "remaining effectively in the customs union and large parts of the single market until Brussels says otherwise".

"Both these scenarios are a million miles from what was promised during the referendum campaign, only further exposing the lies and mistruths sold to the public", he wrote.

"We need to challenge the assumptions of both these Irish backstops, or we are heading full throttle for the ditch with a total write-off of Brexit".

"I think Parliament will vote for a deal because I think people will see the importance of a deal that maintains a good trading relationship with the European Union but also maintains good cooperation in other areas, but gives us the freedom to take the benefits and opportunities of Brexit", she said in an interview broadcast Monday.

May also insisted no other plan on the table would ensure "frictionless" trade in Ireland.

May will travel to a crucial summit in Salzburg this week to sell her plan to the EU27 leaders.

However the PM has said the counter-proposal to her Chequers plan is "still a hard border" and hers is the only way that does not "carve up the United Kingdom" and put the Union at risk.

A hard border between Northern Ireland and the Ireland would breach the Good Friday peace agreement.

The Times newspaper reported that the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, is working on a new protocol text outlining how to use technology to minimize checks on the border. "The pressures this causes means that we have to turn away qualified doctors, teachers, and entrepreneurs from non-EU countries who would make a positive contribution to this country".
