Coca-Cola looking at cannabis-infused drinks

Coca-Cola, Aurora in talks about making cannabis-infused drinks: report

Coca-Cola, Aurora in talks about making cannabis-infused drinks: report

The company said Monday that it's "closely watching" the use of CBD in "functional wellness" beverages.

"The space is evolving quickly", Coca-Cola said.

Coca-Cola insisted "no decisions have been made at this time" and said it would not comment on further speculation.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. led pot stocks higher after Coca-Cola Co. said it's eyeing the cannabis drinks market, becoming the latest beverage company to tap into surging demand for marijuana products as traditional sales slow. Coca-Cola certainly wouldn't be the first to develop cannabis drinks, but it would be a big deal given that it's the world's largest beverage company.

Coca-Cola says it's monitoring the nascent industry and is interested in drinks infused with CBD. (KO) is exploring an entry into marijuana-infused beverages market, according to BNN Bloomberg. The new beverages will be pegged to drinkers who suffer with inflammation, pain or cramping. Cannabidiol - or CBD - is not a mind-altering or psychoactive substance, while its relative, tetrahydrocannabinol - or THC - is.

Canada is set to legalize cannabis on October 17 after both houses of Parliament voted to make the drug available for recreational use.

However, following the news, the Coca-Cola Company released a statement of their own, stating that, as of now, they were only exploring their options. Last month, the beer, wine and spirits producer Constellation Brands signed a deal to invest $5 billion into Canopy Growth Corp., increasing its stake in the cannabis producer to 38 per cent.

While recent events have seen adult-beverage makers jump into the infused-beverages space, some believe the non-alcoholic infused-beverage markets may hold the key.

Aurora was up more than 15% in early trading Monday following the report. That's a non-psychoactive ingredient derived from marijuana.

"We have no interest in marijuana or cannabis", read the company's short and terse sounding statement.
