Trump called the death toll a plot by Democrats to make him look bad.

Trump's handling of the damage Hurricane Maria caused was widely criticized, despite his efforts to paint his response to the storm as a success.

While touting preparations for Florence, Trump patted himself on the back for an "incredibly successful" job done in Puerto Rico, where the government estimates almost 3,000 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria. "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000..." he said, apparently in reference to the official tolls that came out months after the storm.

The Hot Topics table was sacked up this morning on "The View", as the show dove into President Donald Trump's latest tweets saying a report on the death toll in Puerto Rico was inflated to make him look bad.

He said just six to 18 people had been reported dead when he visited two weeks after the storm and suggested that many had been added later "if a person died for any reason, like old age".

Puerto Rico's government last month updated the death toll to 2,975 from an initial estimate of 64.

A Harvard University study in May said at least 4,645 died.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz tweeted to the president on Thursday: "Shame on you", including a picture of his tweet.

Following trump's Friday night tweets, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello had harsh words fro the president.

The study also found that the elderly and low-income Puerto Ricans were the most affected by the storm. "You couldn't get to people for a long time on the island because roads were washed out, power was gone and the casualties mounted for a long time", Ryan said.

The NRA host added that the study by George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health was commissioned by Puerto Rico "who we know has great hatred for Donald Trump, at least the leaders there do".

The Trump administration has been widely criticized for its response to Hurricane Maria a year ago, when the storm devastated the island and crippled its infrastructure.

Members of both parties on Capitol Hill disagreed with the president's statements.

Hurricane Florence is bringing widespread flooding, heavy rains and strong winds to many coastal areas of North and SC.
