Jamie Murray: Serena Williams' sexism claims are 'a bit far-fetched'

Tennis umpires considering boycotting Serena Williams matches: report | TheHill

Almost a week after the US Open women's final, people are still talking about the former world No.1's "meltdown".

Osaka was motivated to reach last Saturday's US Open final so she could challenge her childhood idol Williams.

The real reasons, however, are many. Her total earnings from the controversial match amounted to $3.8 million.

Against that, Naomi is young - much younger than Serena - and she is good, very good.

But the argument is not about whether what she said was or wasn't right: it's about the repercussions she incurred, which included a $17,000 fine in addition to the two-point deduction.

Williams's sister, Venus, has a history with Ramos too.

A Williams rose to stardom, so did the racist attacks against her.

6-2, 6-4, should have been enough to do so.

Ramos was supported - albeit belatedly - by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), who said he acted with "professionalism and integrity" while the Women's Tennis Association had earlier backed Williams' claims that she received unfair treatment. She'll still trail Serena, which isn't surprising at all.

Former star Martina Navratilova says there is no excuse for Serena Williams' behaviour, even if she did have a wee point.

"I've seen a lot of people get called for coaching before, and you might have a grumble and stuff, but you get on with it". It went against everything in sport, and importantly, it took away from Naomi's victory. You stole a point from me.

Because of the overwhelming disparity in the rate of code violations, men lead most of the types of violations, such as racket abuse. In fact, this is the sort of behavior that no one should be engaging in on the court.

nRamos wouldn't have had such thin skin and would've used better judgment before penalizing Williams a game, when she called him a "thief" - that's what passes for "abusing" an official these days? - after he really did steal a game from her.

"If I say something I can tweet it out right now and the whole world can read it, and you can own that", he said.

"Because she is Serena", she answered with a girlish giggle.

"For me I don't feel sad because I wouldn't even know what I'm expected to feel", said Osaka, who has climbed from 19th to seventh in the new world rankings.

That was a compliment bigger than any other.

Lahyani climbed out of his chair during a changeover, stood with hands on knees, and spoke to Kyrgios, saying, among other things, "I want to help you".

That was another compliment from the new US Open champion in recognition of the past champion's greatness, and - who to tell? - the woman who may eventually become, especially on results, the greatest ever.
