Hurricane Florence: North Carolina family's garage submerged in water

Around 11 p.m. Friday, Florence was about 15 miles west-northwest of Myrtle Beach, SC, moving west-southwest at 5 mph, packing maximum-sustained winds of 65 mph. Others could only wait and hope someone would come for them.

Earlier Friday morning, the New Bern Police Department pushed out a tweet showing water rescues in the city.

"You can't get over till we have power and we have sewer up and running", said the retired teacher and real estate agent, who rode out the hurricane in an inland hotel.

Myrtle Beach, a SC beach resort, was deserted with empty streets, boarded up storefronts and very little traffic.

There were no immediate reports of any deaths.

Florence's center may linger for another whole day along coastal North and SC - punishing homes with crushing winds and floods and endangering those who've stayed behind. The deaths also included that of a person killed while plugging in a generator, the governor's office said. "But my mother didn't want to leave, so we went there and got her out".

Almost 900,000 homes and businesses were without power in the Carolinas early on Friday, utility officials said.

Hurricane Florence is battering North Carolina with wild winds and a powerful storm surge. The storm continues to very slowly move west and inland, and will continue to impact the region through the weekend. The rainfall will produce life-threatening flash flooding.

Two people have died so far because of Hurricane Florence here in Eastern Carolina. The remnants of Florence are expected to hit the peaks of western North Carolina in a couple of days. That's enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches (10 centimeters) of water, he calculated.

Storm surges of up to six feet were forecast for Belhaven, North Carolina, where this video was recorded on the night of September 13.

More than 500,000 customers were without power, mostly in North Carolina, as the eye of Hurricane Florence went ashore near Wilmington and began its slow trek along the coast, according to poweroutage.us.

Craven County Emergency Services has reported impassible roads due to flooding; downed power lines; and trees on cars. Traffic lights out of order because of power failures swayed in the gusty wind.

Hurricane-force winds extended 70 miles (110 kilometers) from the center, and tropical storm-force winds reached out 195 miles (315 kilometers). "Plant procedures call for the reactors to be shut down before the anticipated onset of hurricane-force winds", agency spokesman Joey Ledford told CNN. It's since slowed down even more than it had been - moving west at just 2 miles per hour.

Farther up the coast, in New Bern, population 29,000, flooding on the Neuse River trapped people.

"Help is on the way", said Mayor Outlaw.

Residents can be seen wading through deep floodwater in New Bern as they attempt to retrieve their belongings.

"There is going to be a lot of rain". "Trees are blowing down in the wind".

Parts of North and SC were forecast to get as much as one metre of rain.

In the besieged city of New Bern, rescuers had plucked more than 200 people from rising waters by midmorning Friday, but about 150 more had to wait as conditions worsened and a storm surge reached 10 feet, officials said.
