455 people rescued after Florence flooded New Bern, North Carolina

North Carolina Gov Roy Cooper called Florence an "uninvited brute" that could wipe out entire communities as it grinds its way across land.

"This has been forecasted to be an extremely long event and people are putting themselves in harm's way (by traveling)", Pfaff said.

More than 100 people were rescued and up to 75 more were awaiting rescue on Saturday morning, according to a town official.

He said that on Saturday morning, the floodwaters around his home had dropped, leaving a multitude of trees and other debris in their wake. Dozens of electric fix trucks massed to respond to damage expected to hit central North Carolina as rainwater collected into rivers headed to the coast.

People wait in line to fill up their gas cans at a gas station that was damaged when Hurricane Florence hit Wilmington, North Carolina. Many of those were in areas where mandatory evacuations orders were in effect.

Fayetteville's city officials, meanwhile, got help from the Nebraska Task Force One search and rescue team to evacuate 140 residents of an assisted-living facility in Fayetteville to a safer location at a church. Similarly, U.S. 501 would be the only way into Myrtle Beach.

The number of service members deployed include 7,500 from the US Coast Guard and 6,500 from the National Guard, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.

HEMSI spokesperson Don Webster says even if you think you have a good reason for staying behind, doing so can unsafe for you and for first responders.

"What we want to try to do is to minimize the time that people spend in their shelters that they're in right now", Sprayberry said. Authorities say some other fatalities were unrelated.

Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said 63-year-old Mark Carter King and 61-year-old Debra Collins Rion were killed by breathing in carbon monoxide.

Florence slammed into the North Carolina coast as a large hurricane Friday, dumping almost three feet (1 meter) of rain and swelling the region's rivers.

That's the new North Carolina record for most rainfall from a single tropical system.

In general, south eastern sections of North Carolina like Wilmington and Fayetteville are at risk of flooding. Areas like New Bern also could see an additional 3 to 5 feet of storm surge as high tide combines with the seawater still being pushed ashore by Florence, Graham said.

Tropical Storm Florence is expected to weaken into a depression soon but flash flooding and major river flooding are expected to continue over significant portions of the Carolinas.

Catastrophic floods raised the threat of dam breaks and landslides across the Carolinas on Sunday, prolonging the agony caused by a killer hurricane that has left more than a dozen dead and billions of dollars in damage in the southeastern United States.

Three medical centers have been set up in North Carolina.

After blowing ashore as a hurricane with 90 miles per hour (145 kph) winds, Florence virtually parked itself much of the weekend atop the Carolinas as it pulled warm water from the ocean and hurled it onshore.

President Donald Trump tweeted late Saturday that "five deaths have been recorded thus far, ' and expressed sympathy to the victims" families.

Florence has caused catastrophic flooding since arriving as a category one hurricane on Friday.

North Carolina must withstand more torrential rains, gusty winds, and river flooding from Tropical Storm Florence next week, but emergency leaders are already working on the recovery.
