Umpire Breaks His Silence Amid Serena Williams' Sexism Accusations Over Controversial Calls

Tennis umpires are considering boycotting future matches of Serena Williams after her outburst against gold-badge official Carlos Ramos during the US Open final.

"There is a lot of unhappiness in the umpiring community because no one is standing up for officials", the senior figure told The Guardian.

Ramos penalised Williams for on-court coaching (first violation), racket abuse (second violation, point penalty) and calling him a "thief" (third violation, game penalty).

King said she hoped the incident would bring about needed changes to the sport, including allowing for direct communication between the umpire and the fans over a loudspeaker and ending the ban on coaching during Grand Slam matches.

"Several things went very wrong during the U.S. Open women's finals today", posted retired tennis star Billie Jean King.

When asked about the behavior of Serena Williams at the US Open on Saturday, Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry came to the defense of his fellow superstar. Critics say his exaggerated depiction of Williams's physical features is reminiscent of historically racist cartoons and that he white washed the appearance of Japan's Osaka by drawing her with a blonde ponytail.

"Yeah I think she was a spoiled brat", he said.

It was drawn in response to Williams' behaviour during her loss in the 2018 US Open final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

"You're told to just turn around and try to focus, so I tried to do that, but in my mind I was sort of...like, I really wanted to know what was going on".

Williams, who lost in straight sets to 20-year-old Naomi Osaka, labelled Ramos a "liar" and a "thief" after he docked her a point when coach Patrick Mouratoglou was caught trying to send signals from the sidelines.

Osaka appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show following her maiden grand slam final win which was overshadowed by Williams becoming embroiled in an epic fight with umpire Carlos Ramos after being slapped with a game penalty for three code violations. We'll get through it. Let's give everyone credit where credit's due, and let's not boo anymore.

Alternatively, USTA head Katrina Adams said male players badger "the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens".

Speaking to Tribuna Expresso in his native Portugal, Carlos Ramos said: "I'm fine, given the circumstances".

DailyMail.com reached out to the ITF about Ramos' interview, asking if he would be punished or fined, and a rep for the agency said that they were not in a position to comment on the matter but someone would be in contact.

A report by The Times of London published on Tuesday cited an anonymous official saying that tennis umpires are considering refusing to officiate matches involving Williams. "They feel that no one has their back when they have to make unpopular calls".
