Miami Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson were the first players of the 2018 regular season to take a knee during the playing of the national anthem before the game. Before the late games, Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas and linebacker Brandon Marshall, and Seahawks linemen Duane Brown and Quinton Jefferson, retreated to their respective tunnels while the anthem played.

"No one wants this added stress or added negativity or hatred coming toward them", he told the Times.

Back in May, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that players and league personnel on the sidelines would be required to stand during the national anthem. Former 49ers safety Eric Reid joined Kaepernick in the protest.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the NFL is not expected to implement a new policy on the national anthem this season, no matter how many meetings and conversations occur regarding the topic. They have not backed down, even when attacked and intimidated. However, online sales of Nike apparel and shoes surged in the four days after Kaepernick became the face of a new advertising campaign.

Since opting out of his contract after 2016, Kaepernick has been unable to land a job with an NFL team and is suing the league for collusion.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has shown his support for players that knelt during the U.S. national anthem in week one of the 2018 NFL season. The protest soon spread around the league with critics - including the United States president - saying it disrespected the flag and the military. "Otherwise worse!" he added.

He features in a new Nike commercial that was introduced during the first game of the National Football League season between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons on September 6.

"Wow, NFL first game ratings are way down over an already really bad past year comparison", Trump tweeted yesterday morning.

Another said: "I wonder what Colen Kaepernick has sacrificed for his country and people?"
