Evacuations Ordered as Hurricane Florence Becomes Category 4 Storm

Not long after, a Hurricane Hunter flight measured sustained winds near 130 miles per hour, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue a rare special advisory, upgrading the storm to Category 4.

Florence is now about 600 miles south of Bermuda and it's quickly gaining strength as it moves northwest toward the US. The hurricane is about 580 miles SSE of Bermuda and 1,240 miles ESE of Cape Fear, North Carolina. Currently, three hurricanes with divergent paths are churning through the Atlantic, and most urgently, forecasters are sounding the alarm about Florence.

On the latest track, it is projected to make landfall somewhere along the Carolina coastline late Thursday night into early Friday.

Spaghetti plots from hurricane forecast models and other weather forecast models show the likelihood of Florence making landfall in the United States is now significantly higher, with the cone narrowed on the Carolina's. The storm is now expected to careen into the Carolina coast on Thursday or early Friday, and USA Today reports North Carolina is already in preparation mode: Gov. Roy Cooper has requested a federal declaration disaster, and Cape Hatteras Island is under a mandatory evacuation order for Monday; Duck and Corolla face the same order for Tuesday.

The New Jersey and DE coastlines will feel the effects from Florence by Tuesday afternoon regardless as swells increase and risky rip currents begin. Spots with the highest risk for rip current formation are breaks in sandbars and near structures like terminal groins, jetties and piers, but beachgoers should stay on alert everywhere.

The next National Hurricane Center advisory is scheduled for 5 a.m. Sunday.

Hurricane Isaac has seriously weakened recently due to the wind shear in the Atlantic.

In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Olivia is set to sweep through the Hawaiian islands Tuesday, where tropical storm watches have been posted.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence is expected to slam into the coast around North and SC as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane on Thursday or Friday.

If you live along the US coast from the Southeast to the Mid-Atlantic, you need to prepare for what increasingly looks like a worst case scenario: landfall of a Category 3 or even 4 hurricane.

Posting a video of the intensifying storm, Trump added, "To the incredible citizens of North Carolina, South Carolina and the entire East Coast - the storm looks very bad!"

Residents in North Carolina have been issued with a mandatory evacuation order as Hurricane Florence has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm.

Maui County Emergency Management Agency will continue to monitor the situation. "Everyone should start preparing now".

Winds are now 105 miles per hour. The storm is forecast to strengthen even more. Drawing energy from the warm water, the now Category 2 storm could be a fearsome Category 4 with winds of 130 miles per hour (209 kph) or more by Tuesday.

"The chances of it going out to sea are extremely slim at this point", she said.

We'll just have to wait and see where all of them go.

"Although Isaac is forecast to begin weakening when it approaches the Lesser Antilles, as it is still expected to be at or near hurricane intensity when it reaches the islands".

"This is going to be big", said Victoria Oliva, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington. There could also be major inland flooding from a prolonged heavy rainfall event.

According to the North Carolina Emergency Management agency on September 9, there is now an "increasing risk of life-threatening impacts: storm surge at coast, flooding inland ..."
