They led by one stroke from American Xander Schauffele in the third of four playoff events on tour.

Day fired a six-under-par 64 on day two at the BMW Championship - his best score in this year's edition of the $US67 million finals - to sit four shots off the pace at Philadelphia's Aronimink Golf Club.

Woods added: "The fact that I challenged at Valspar earlier this year was a bit shocking considering I didn't know how much I'd play this year". The list includes Tiger Woods, who shot 66 and made up no ground on the lead.

McIlroy had a one-under 69 for a nine-under total, one shot ahead of 14-time major victor Woods, who looked furious with himself after he bogeyed his final two holes in a level-par 70.

Woods also had a disappointing second day and slipped five shots off the lead to tied 12th after a level-par 70. Only 30 of the 70 will make it to the Tour Championship at East Lake, which means that 40 of the players in this week's field won't make it to the final stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

"We all benefit from Tiger Woods playing well, " McIlroy said after the round.

Schauffele has been considered one of the odd men out in the Ryder Cup discussion, with captain Jim Furyk expected to pick Tony Finau when he announces the 12 and final spot Monday morning. I got a couple rounds in front of me, 36 holes to try and win this tournament. "But they didn't go in today".

"I made a few putts today", Woods told the Golf Channel. 9, 10, 11 in the standings - and has one more pick after the BMW Championship. He struggled to hit his approaches close, and even when he did, the putts were not dropping. I didn't want to lose too much ground.

"Still have a good chance tomorrow", Schauffele said.

The PGA Tour's on-site meteorologist Joe Halvorson laid out some best-case and worst-case scenarios on Saturday night for what Sunday might look like. I think with the way the conditions are, especially with the rain that's forecast, I can't see the scoring being any different.

Through all the sweat, through all the birdies, they managed to give Philadelphia fans a reason to cheer for golf in the hours before the Super Bowl champion Eagles opened the National Football League season Thursday night against Atlanta.
