Any display of longer-range missiles would have cast doubt on North Korea's commitment to denuclearisation, he added.

The parade highlight themes of military accomplishment, national development, and global engagement at a time when doubts are arising over Kim's commitment to abandoning nuclear weapons.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated Kim Jong Un and North Korea on the 70th anniversary of the country's founding, hailing once again what he has called the "new historical period" that North Korea has entered.

China and North Korea fought together in the 1950-1953 Korean war against the US-led United Nations Command. We will both prove everyone wrong! Trump wrote. "There is nothing like good dialogue from two people that like each other! Much better than before I took office", Trump tweeted.

Although North Korea stages military parades nearly every year, and held one just before the Olympics began in South Korea in February this year, Sunday's parade comes at a particularly sensitive time.

In April, Kim declared that the North's development of nuclear weapons had been completed and "socialist economic construction" would be the new strategic priority.

Moreover, Li Zhanshu, a member of China's Politbureau Standing Committee and, as the country's parliamentary head, widely seen as the number three player in the Chinese Communist Party, joined North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in reviewing the parade.

During the parade, people waved balloons, flowers and flags as goose-stepping soldiers, tanks and floats passed by.

A parade dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea took place in Pyongyang on September 9.

During their meeting, Kim said he would denuclearize before US President Donald Trump's term expires, and expressed "unwavering trust" in Trump, according to Chung Eui-yong, South Korea's National Security Adviser, who headed the group of Seoul's envoys.

Despite no agreement yet between Pyongyang and Washington on the denuclearization process the two agreed to at their landmark Singapore summit in June, and with Pyongyang demanding the U.S. agree to a peace treaty to end the 1950-53 Korean War, there have, over the last week, been some encouraging signals.

The circumstances might have prompted Kim to demonstrate a "different attitude" from the North's previous military parades, through which the country has stunned the world with advanced ballistic missiles and bellicose rhetoric, analysts say. So it's possible Kim might choose to display them but give the missiles a lower profile if he makes his usual address just before the parade begins.

Songs included "Socialism, I love you", and the first-ever public performance of a new ode to Kim Jong Un, "Be loved, our father". He claims to have perfected his nuclear arsenal enough to deter USA aggression and devote his resources to raising his nation's standard of living.

This year's celebrations also marked the revival of North Korea's iconic mass games after a five-year hiatus.

The mass games involve tens of thousands of people holding up placards or dancing in precise unison and are meant to be a display of national unity.

Tickets to this year's spectacle started at just over US$100 and went up to more than US$800 per seat.

A concert was held on the eve of the anniversary for foreign dignitaries and a large foreign media contingent allowed in for the events.

"Now that Kim and Trump have pledged to trust and respect each other, Kim wants to come off as a trustworthy and considerate partner to Trump", said Kim Dong-yup, a professor at Kyungnam University's Far East Institute.
