According to CTPost.com, the woman was trying to light a candle during a power outage in a thunderstorm.

A CT mother incurred severe injuries after lighting what she believed was a candle, but was actually "a quarter stick of dynamite", during a power outage, officials said.

Per the Hartford Courant, the 30-year-old woman suffered extensive injuries to her hands and face at her Bridgeport home. She was since then taken to Yale-New haven Hospital, where she now remains for treatment.

The woman, who is a mother of two children, tried to go to Home Depot to buy emergency lighting.

But it exploded, causing injuries to one of her hands so severe that they may lead to her losing multiple fingers, Fox61 reported. A number of neighbours were evacuated from their homes and the woman's children are staying with relatives.

Members of the Bridgeport Fire Department and Connecticut State Police removed another dynamite device from the home, later detonated and disposing of it, according to WABC. Nearby homes were also searched for explosives as a precaution.

It is against the law to have dynamite or fireworks in the state of CT, but police aren't pressing charges. Police said it's preferable the lighting be battery-operated, glow stick, or handcrank-powered, to avoid the risk of fire damage.

Following the incident, Harris urged the public to call their local fire department if they should find something flame- or fire-related and they don't know what it is.
