US Open contenders feeling the heat

Novak Djokovic vs John Millman

Novak Djokovic vs John Millman

The last time Nishikori reached the last four of the US Open in 2014, he pulled off the biggest win of his career to date, beating Novak Djokovic to reach the final.

Despite a losing record against Cilic at the US Open, Nishikori does lead their overall head-to-head and was the victor in their only meeting in 2018 so far - a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win in Monte Carlo on clay. The thirteen-time Grand Slam title victor will now take on Kei Nishikori of Japan to book his berth in the second consecutive Grand Slam final of the year.

For Osaka, who is 20, this is her first trip past the fourth round at a major.

On Saturday, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will meet Naomi Osaka, who was age 1 when Williams won her first Grand Slam in the 1999 women's final.

"I've gotten a lot better managing my emotions once it gets to this part and knowing that everything is going to be probably more amped up", Keys said. "I was returning well", Djokovic said after the game.

Tsurenko didn't appear bothered by the conditions, but whether it was her health or just first-time jitters, she was off from the minute she stepped onto the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 20th-seeded Osaka, a rising talent who won her first career title in March at Indian Wells, used a lethal ground game and solid serving to overwhelm a tired Tsurenko, who laboured in stifling conditions on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Novak Djokovic beat Kei Nishikori on Friday night to advance to his eighth US Open men's final. But he couldn't capitalize and Djokovic took the first set 6-3.

There were other issues for Djokovic, as well, including in the third set when, ahead by a break, he was called by the chair umpire for allowing the 25-second serve clock - making its Grand Slam debut at this tournament - to run out on back-to-back points.

It all took less than 90 minutes against Suarez Navarro, who eliminated five-time major champion Maria Sharapova in straight sets in her previous match but has never made it to the semifinals at a major.

@kelli_green added: "millman's gonna get hit with reality tonight... he caught federer on an off night when the weather was so hot." b***, it was hot for millman too and he beat the #2 guy in the world. if he loses to djokovic tonight it won't be because he's a chump. mcenroe is a d***. Many different elements play a role in these particular matches, and very few points really. That all changed in the middle of the second set, when the Croat with the score 4:2 managed to lose four games in a row.

He said: "He's got one of the best two-handed backhands in the game and very quick".

"Maybe I will try to watch the match again and get more confidence". He was able to come through on only four of his 20 break points. After missing several open shots, Djokovic doubled over and staggered around the court as his camp - coaches, trainer, and wife Jelena - looked on worriedly. Mini-breaks were aplenty - seven in total - and it was Nishikori's mind games which tricked Cilic into surrendering the set.

Djokovic was not to be denied though, as he timed the final break of serve to perfection, grabbing the advantage in game nine before serving out to love to seal his passage into the final four. "Especially after coming from injury, I think I'm enjoying this challenge".
