A powerful natural disaster with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 has struck just off the coast of Fiji, but it was centered far below the seabed, seismologists say. No tsunami warnings were issued.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no Pacific-wide tsunami was expected either.

Fiji is an archipelago in the southwestern Pacific ocean, comprising more than 300 Islands, about one-third of which are uninhabited.




The natural disaster was initially registered as an 8.1 magnitude by USGS but was later downgraded to a 7.8.

Today's quake in Fiji follows an 8.2 magnitude tremor which struck off the Pacific island nation on August 19.

There have been no reports of damage.
