Truett McConnell University has chose to end its relationship Nike citing the company's decision to align itself with disgraced ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. A CBS News poll last fall found that Americans are unhappy with both the protests during the anthem and President Trump's comments on the issue.

Star athletes also appeared in the video including tennis superstar Serena Williams, basketball icon LeBron James and one-handed rookie football player Shaquem Griffin.

The company drew immediate backlash this week for a print ad that stated, "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything".

Nike's most high-profile critic is President Donald Trump, but he has been fixated on players protesting the anthem, and Nike's support of that cause, more than anything else.

Jenkins said he thinks players should shift the focus of the debate away from the anthem itself and back to the issues they are trying to highlight.

Kaepernick first sat and then knelt during the playing of the national anthem before NFL games starting in 2016 to protest police brutality and racial injustice in the United States.

Beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, she said, American Legion Post 170 in town will be collecting Nike apparel to help raise money for Vietnam veterans.

The small Christian College of the Ozarks announced in a news release it was scrapping Nike-made uniforms "and anything else that displays the Nike "swoosh" logo".

Nike recently signed an extension to its deal as the NFL's official uniform sponsor.

The commercial has polarized opinion, with Trump among those critical of Nike for giving Kaepernick a public platform.

"Quite frankly, long after all of this is done (Kaepernick) will be looked at as somebody that changed this sport and changed the dynamics of all athletes in general in our country", Jenkins said. He also has worn socks depicting police officers as pigs.

The spot is expected to air this week during college football and Major League Baseball games, and stream on various music, gaming and other platforms, Nike spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John said.

PGA Championship victor and two-time U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka said the biggest victor might be the publicity sparked for Nike.
