The Times-Picayune reports that drivers around the metro New Orleans area are lining up to put sand bags in their trunks.

After forming near the Florida Keys Monday morning and moving west-northwest into the Gulf of Mexico, Gordon brought winds of almost 50 miles per hour and sometimes heavy rains over Tampa Bay by midday. Gordon is expected increase to a Category One hurricane by landfall late Tuesday night, potentially bringing 80 miles per hour winds and more than five inches of rain to south Mississippi. Some areas in south Brevard could see more. A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible.

Gordon is expected to continue on its current track or maybe a little more northwestward while continuing to strengthen.

Police advised beach-goers to stay indoors.

For the Bradenton area, the National Weather Service says there is a 70 percent chance showers and windy conditions on Monday, eventually dropping to 50 percent Monday night.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Florence poses no threat to Florida and is unlikely to become a hurricane.

The storm was generating winds of 75 km/h on Monday as it steamed west-northwest at 26 km/h, National Hurricane Center Director Kenneth Graham said in a video briefing on Facebook.

A Tropical Storm Warning includes the coast from the Western Florida Panhandle through Alabama and MS to Louisiana, including New Orleans, Pensacola, Mobile, Fort Walton Beach, Biloxi, and Gulfport.

State of Emergency has been issued for the Gulf coast after tropical storms hit Southern parts of Florida and heading towards Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Gordon is now pounding south Florida with high winds and heavy rainfall. And, isolated tornadoes are possible across South Florida.

"The biggest impact to our state will be heavy rain, but in Florida, we know how quickly weather can change", Gov. Scott said. The risk is enhanced Monday afternoon near the Atlantic coastline from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach where stronger individual thunderstorms may develop and move ashore.

Conditions should improve along the coast during the day Wednesday, while heavy rain expands inland through western MS, northeast Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas.

Tropical storm warnings have been posted for portions of South Florida and the Florida Keys, as well as portions of the northern Gulf Coast. The storm surge watch has been extended eastward from the Mississippi-Alabama border to Navarre, Florida.

Although some storm systems have been known to help dissipate Red Tide, it was unclear Monday how the churn from Gordon may affect the toxic algae bloom blanketing 130 miles of the southwest Florida coast.
