At the age of 33, the Italian feels the five-time Ballon d'Or victor should get to grips that he will need to conserve energy to remain at the elite level he's displayed over the last decade.

Lionel Messi failed to make The Best FIFA Men's Player Award shortlist on Monday for the first time since 2006, with Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah making their first appearance in the final three alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

The manager also revealed that he did not speak to Ronaldo before the Portuguese moved on.

If Ronaldo wins on 24 September, it will his sixth Federation Internationale de Football Association award.

Salah has been a revelation for Liverpool, scoring 43 goals in all competitions last season for the Reds and helping to fire Jurgen Kloop's side to the Champions League final, where he was forced off after suffering a shoulder injury.

Can he break the Ronaldo-Messi dominance?

'Real Madrid are one of the best teams in the world and they have a great squad [but] it's evident that the absence of Ronaldo makes them less good, ' Messi told Catalunya Radio.

"He's this quiet guy we know from Real Madrid, but when we saw him in the World Cup he became a majestic leader".

The finalists for this year's world football's premium awards event also include Brazil's Marta, Zinédine Zidane, Asako Takakura and Hugo Lloris, amongst the nominees. However, former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has set the record straight.

"We're favourites to win again what we've won in the past, but we need to prove we're the best and now we've got a tough month to come with the start of the Champions League".

But his wonderful World Cup goal for Argentina against Nigeria in St Petersburg grants the Barcelona superstar his sixth nomination for a prize he is yet to win.
