Nadal versus Thiem was actually the first deciding set tiebreak among the men to be played here after 122 singles matches, and there have only been three in the women's best-of-three format.

"To reach the semi-final again here in NY in my favourite tournament is very special to me", said Del Potro after his eighth win over Isner in 12 meetings.

"I weigh 238 pounds, so I have always said it's pretty hard to play in hot conditions", said Isner, who had 11 shirt changes during match.

Isner hit 67 winners to Del Potro's 49 but the victor made just 14 unforced errors to prove too consistent for his good friend.

The 2009 champion will face Rafael Nadal or Dominic Thiem on Friday.

"But, look, at some point also I was just happy that the match was over, I guess".

With the extreme heat rule allowing for a 10-minute respite between the third and fourth sets, both men took full advantage.

"I had a shower, lay on the table and I didn't want to come back again".

Isner said he needed to change his shirt 11 times.

Del Potro's serve held up at crunch moments and he saved the three break points he faced while he managed the break Isner on three occasions, including the final game of the match.

Another break point came and went for the Argentine in the second set before he deservedly broke through for 3-1, backed up by a love service hold. As usual, he had to do it without the benefit of many cheap points; he hit just three aces, 15 fewer than Thiem.

Speaking after he had won that fourth set to reach the last four Del Potro spoke about the heat and what he did during the break.

Isner, meanwhile, will return to Dallas as quickly as he can where his wife is due to give birth to their first child in two weeks' time.

Del Potro now has two days off before the semi-finals but will be keeping to himself, saying: "If I met them it could be unsafe for me".

"He's maybe playing some of the best tennis ever right now for him", said the American.

Nadal holds a 7-3 career lead over the 25-year-old but Tuesday's clash under the Arthur Ashe lights will be their first away from a clay court.

US Open: Rafael Nadal crossed the net and embraced Dominic Thiem after winning quarter-final. "I reach another semi-finals in this grand slam, which means something big to me".

Nadal battled his way through to a seventh US Open semi-final appearance after finally overcoming Thiem at the Arthur Ashe Stadium last night.

Federer complained that he had struggled to breathe in the nearly airless conditions inside the arena as he slumped to a shock defeat to John Millman, the world number 55 on Monday.
