White House Invokes Executive Privilege On Vast Cache of Kavanaugh Documents

What To Expect From The Kavanaugh Confirmation Hearing

What To Expect From The Kavanaugh Confirmation Hearing

In the days leading up to the hearing, Democrats have slammed the White House for withholding more than 100,000 pages of records related to Kavanaugh, a former White House staffer and lawyer for Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr who now sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The documents in question were part of the judge's time serving the Bush White House and the GOP says the documents are protected under presidential privilege.

In his letter, Burck defined the withheld documents as those that "reflect deliberations and candid advice concerning the selection of judicial candidates" as well as advice submitted directly to Bush, substantive communications between White House staff about discussions with the President and "substantive deliberative discussions relating to or about executive orders or legislation considered by the Executive Office".

Klobuchar complained about decisions that have blocked access to or shielded use of documents concerning the several years Kavanaugh spent as a White House aide in President George W. Bush's administration.

With attempts to attack Brett M. Kavanaugh's record failing, Democrats over the weekend mounted a last-ditch bid to derail his confirmation to the Supreme Court by claiming that the vetting process is so bad that it demands a do-over.

The confirmation hearings for President Trump's nominee to be the next Supreme Court justice, Brett Kavanaugh, begin Tuesday, and Fox News Channel has can't-miss coverage.

He added the remaining documents not included also presented functions of the executive office, which are traditionally kept confidential as part of a president's constitutional privileges.

"You have a nominee who has one of the most expansive views of presidential power that we've seen in history", she said. Unite in opposition? Boycott the hearing?

That stance is likely to anger Senate Democrats who want more campaign finance restrictions, arguing that rich donors have gained too much influence in politics through their ability to fund outside groups that run ads influencing elections.

On Friday, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the decision to withhold thousands of others "has all the makings of a cover-up ..." But the privilege was never formally asserted.

In Kavanaugh's case, Republicans are circumventing the normal vetting process for Supreme Court nominees by in order to have him confirmed by October 1, the start of the court's new term. What are they trying so desperately to hide?'
