Canada Trade Talks In Jeopardy After Leaked ‘Off The Record’ Trump Comments

"So, the main mechanism is actually through reducing fear of the business community that the world trading system can be seriously be disrupted by any of Trump's tactics - mainly because he's just not converting his harsh Tweets into severe sanctions, other than for China, who is feeling the brunt of his particular pressure at the moment".

"Congress should not interfere with these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely and we will be far better off".

Trump notified Congress on Friday of his intent to sign a revamped deal in 90 days, amid negotiations that blew past the deadline imposed by the president. He added: "The Worker in America is doing better than ever before".

It's not clear, however, whether the Trump administration has the authority to strike a deal with just Mexico, as it announced Monday, and exclude Canada.

The NAFTA was signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States in 1993 and came into force in 1994, during the presidency of Bill Clinton.

Driving that optimism was agreement on auto content that would favour Canada and the United States due to their higher-wage workers, making it less appealing for manufacturers to move production to Mexico.

"There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal".

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the negotiations over the past four days were "constructive, and we made progress".

Talks between Team Trump and Canadian leaders collapsed Friday, the same day the Toronto Star published off-the-record comments the president made in an interview with Bloomberg News. But Canada's dairy industry - backed by Quebec politicians of all stripes - is adamant that it won't stand for the government allowing the US any more market access, saying it has compromised enough on past trade deals with the European Union and Pacific Rim countries.

Donald Trump said there is "no political necessity" to keep Canada in the NAFTA agreement if a "fair deal" can not be reached.

The U.S. -Canada talks are set to resume Wednesday.

In a reflection of the gravity of the situation, Trump abruptly canceled his golf game to keep working on a deal, according to Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Outgoing Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto wanted to sign a deal before he left office December 1.

Mike Huckabee took issue on Labor Day with AFL/CIO President Richard Trumka over his comments about the economy and American workers, saying there is no way he could say matters are not good. But both the USA and Canada are facing their own pressures. If we don't make a fair deal for the USA after decades of abuse, Canada will be out.

He then balked at lawmakers who criticized the move, waring them not to "interfere" with the administration's bare-knuckle negotiating. Ottawa does have other complaints.

"I also strongly urge Canada to step up and demonstrate that it can take on the ambitious obligations of the agreement with the aim of concluding a modern, seamless three-way agreement", he said. Between 8 and 10 percent of Kansas agriculture exports are sold to Canada, including meat from the state's packing plants, flour and soybean products.
